Birmingham Race Impact

Three-year Board Challenge (2025 Update)

In 2024 PACT was proud to be the first multi academy trust adopter of the Birmingham Race Impact Group’s (BRIG) three-year board challenge.

In addition to our public commitment to this community-led campaign, supporting the need for Birmingham’s boards to be reflective of the city’s diversity, we have implemented an immediate action plan and embedded the principles of RSM’s RACE Equality Code – a leading EDI tool designed to set tangible goals for organisations around equality, diversity, and inclusion.

For transparency, the Trust’s 2025 targets, approved by the Board of Trustees (February 2025), are shared below:

1. Establish Baseline Data and Set Clear Racial Inclusion Metrics

  • Action: Conduct a comprehensive audit of current racial diversity across staff, students, and leadership within the trust. Collect baseline data on recruitment, retention, and promotion rates, as well as student outcomes by race.
  • Measurable Impact: Use this data to set clear, measurable goals for improvement in staff and leadership diversity, as well as student performance equity, to be tracked over the next year.
  • Outcome: Regular progress reports on key racial inclusion metrics to the board, including staff diversity targets and student success benchmarks.

2. Develop and Implement a Comprehensive Trust-Wide EDI Strategy

  • Action: Create and launch a Trust-wide Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) strategy, incorporating clear objectives and actions across all schools in the trust. This strategy will include provisions for staff training, curriculum development, and community engagement to promote inclusivity.
  • Measurable Impact: By the end of the academic year, ensure that each school has an action plan aligned with the EDI strategy, with at least 75% of staff completing EDI training and 50% of schools reporting increased student engagement in diversity-related initiatives.
  • Outcome: A unified approach to EDI across the Trust, with a clear, actionable strategy in place, resulting in increased awareness, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging for students and staff.

3. Strengthen Accountability and Governance Structures for Racial Inclusion

  • Action: Integrate racial inclusion into the Trust’s governance framework, including the establishment of an EDI subcommittee or dedicated board member to oversee progress, ensuring regular reviews of actions and outcomes.
  • Measurable Impact: Ensure that racial inclusion is a tabled agenda item at board meetings, with measurable actions reviewed quarterly. Publicly report on progress in the annual governance statement.
  • Outcome: Greater accountability and transparency in the Trust’s racial inclusion efforts, with demonstrable progress in board and executive engagement and oversight.

The Board of Trustees has committed to report against the Trust’s progress towards these targets as part of its formal annual reporting cycle.
